TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Leading the Industry in Commercializing Fuel Cell Technology
Medis fuel cell power products have several key competitive technological advantages over virtually every other portable power technology under development for handheld electronic devices. While other portable fuel cell solutions are only prototypes, the Medis 24-7 Power Pack will be widely commercialized later this year. Other fuel cell developers technology is based on the traditional proton exchange membrane (PEM) or methanol-based technologies – Medis is not. Unlike the traditional fuel cell classes, Medis technology is simple, effective and affordable.

Totally Passive Technology
Our Power Pack product is based on totally passive technology; it uses no pumps, valves or complex moving parts. It is a totally self-regulating product. Most other technologies use pumps, valves, regulators or similar devices to move fuel and manage heat and water, often called the B.O.P. or “balance of plant”. The BOP can double the size and weight of competitive fuel cell systems, not to mention decrease reliability, parasitically consume much of the power generated, create heat and significantly increase cost and complexity.

No Exotic Materials Required
All materials used in the construction of our product are readily available materials available commercially in high volume. This allows us to aggressively ramp up to high volume without material supply issues while keeping costs low. Other fuel cell technology products under development require exotic and expensive materials, such as Nafion membranes or gas diffusion materials that are currently available in only limited quanitities.

Stable Liquid Fuel
Our technology is based on liquid fuel that is non-flammable, chemically stable, and easy to contain over the conditions needed for consumer products. Other technologies are based on hydrogen or methanol will have challenges managing their fuel. Hydrogen is a gas that will not be energy dense enough unless it is under high pressure or held in a special hydride cell. Additionally, hydrogen tends to “fatigue” certain metals, creating other safety problems. Methanol is a liquid, but it has a very low boiling point (65°C), so it will tend to vaporize and create pressure under some demanding environments. And, both are flammable materials creating even greater engineering and safety challenges.

Low Operating Temperature and Low Heat Generation
Unlike other chemistries, our technology works over a broad range of temperatures. Other chemistries need to be at elevated temperatures to provide meaningful power, but our technology is happy to operate at any condition at which you would feel comfortable. In addition, our technology is efficient and does not produce significant heat during operation.

Insensitive
Methanol and PEM technologies are sensitive to contamination in the air or fuel, such as perfumes, fumes, smoke…most anything with a strong odor. These contaminates clog their catalyst and prevent or slow operation. Because our technology does not require these sensitive catalysts, our product is not affected by such contaminants in the air.

Green Energy
Medis is committed to the environment and green technology.  The Direct Liquid Fuel Cell technology is green.  Our Medis Power Pack does not contain or use environmentally damaging materials or chemicals.  Click here to learn more.
