FUTURE
POWER PACK PRODUCTS & APPLICATIONS
The Power Pack is the world’s first consumer
fuel cell product. Based on Medis’ proprietary Direct Liquid Fuel
Cell (DLFC) technology and the result of seven years of research and
development, the Power Pack is a break-through in fuel cell performance,
cost and accessibility.
Platform Technology
Broadens Its Possibilities
The DLFC technology is a platform technology that can be extended to
other fuel cell product offerings beyond the current Power Pack product.
By extending our established technology to larger format fuel cell products,
Medis is in a unique position to create an entire family of fuel cell
products that provide a cost effective high performance solution. We
have already developed and demonstrated several higher power (5W to
20W) fuel cells prototypes for military and consumer applications and
we are working now to develop our second generation products. In addition,
we have demonstrated a 400W system for military UAV applications.
Below is an outline of our vision for next generation
products and target timing for product introduction.
Current Power Pack Product
The current product is a fully contained single-use fuel cell with an
integrated fuel cartridge. It will be available for commercial sales
in high volume in 2008.
Power Pack with Hybrid
Cable
To address higher power demand for some electronic devices, Medis is
developing a High Performance Cable. This cable will handle higher current
and increase the Power Pack product compatibility with even more devices.
The High Performance Cable will use a small lithium
ion battery in the key. When the Power Pack is connected, power will
be supplied to the device from both the lithium ion battery and the
Power Pack simultaneously. By hybridizing the cable, the Power Pack
will support power-hungry devices.
Extended Use Portable
Lighting
The functionality of the Medis Power Pack is being extended to portable
lighting applications. Several potential product extensions are
under development that combines the electrical efficiency of LED lighting
and the power performance of the Medis Power Pack. For example,
a typical LED flashlight can be operated continuously for 6-8 weeks
on one Power Pack. Alternatively, a 30 lumen LED bulb (enough
light to illuminate a small room) can be operated for 16-20 hours. Both
applications would be ideal for outdoor activities, emergency situations
or industrial applications.
Single Fueling Cartridge
Based Power Pack Product
The single fueling cartridge-based Power Pack product will be similar
to the current Power Pack product in that it will be a single-fueling
(disposable) fuel cell product, however, instead of integrating the
fuel cartridge inside the product the fuel will be provided in a fuel
cartridge that the consumer will use to charge the product. By taking
the fuel cartridge out of the product we can provide a substantially
smaller and more energy-dense product and this product will set the
stage for a fully refuelable Power Pack product.
We estimate that the single fueling cartridge-based
Power Pack will be commercially available in 2009.
Refuelable Power Pack
Product
The refuelable Power Pack product will be a further extension of the
Power Pack. The consumer would purchase one Power Pack and after the
energy is depleted the consumer need only purchase a cartridge to change
the fuel and refresh the Power Pack. Because the cartridge is substantially
less expense than the Power Pack, the consumer’s total cost to
use the product will be lower.
The target timing for availability of the Refuelable Power Pack is 2010.
Medis Laptop Power Source
Product
The Medis Laptop Power Source will be a 20W stand
alone fuel cell product designed to provide up to 8 hours of extended
laptop operations on a single fueling for use while traveling or for
use in remote locations. The laptop would be connected to the Medis
Laptop Power Source by a cable and tips with an appropriate connector
interface for the specific laptop product. The Medis Laptop Power Source
would also have USB ports accessible to power or charge other handheld
electronic devices simultaneously.
Energy would be provided to the system in the form
of a fuel cartridge and the consumer would change the fuel cartridge
to replenish the fuel cell system. Target timing is 2010. Medis is currently
seeking development partners for this program.
Military 800W Product
for UAV Applications
Medis is developing an 800W fuel cell prototype for Israeli Aerospace
Industries (IAI) for UAV (unmanned air vehicles) applications. UAVs
use powerful electric engines to silently fly the craft over long distances
for extended operating time. Our fuel cell technology could help extend
mission times in the field. Prototypes producing 400W have already been
demonstrated and tested and an 800W system will be demonstrated
by the end of 2008.
Stationary Power Product
for SOHO and Military Applications
The technology developed and demonstrated for the UAV product can be
extended to 1-2 kW SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) or military product.
The technology we developed is modular, so it can be extended to cover
a wide range of product offerings in a cost effective package. Target
timing is 2011. Medis is currently seeking development partners for
this program.
Kiosk Central Charging
Station for Remote and Third World Applications
Medis Technologies is in a unique position to offer
emerging markets and under-serviced third world locations an energy
solution that can improve the telephone system accessibility in these
locations. In much of the third world there is no established land-line
phone system and only limited access to grid power. Communications are
solely reliant on cellular technology and there is often no way for
members of these communities to charge their phones.
Medis Technologies proposes to develop a Central Charging
Kiosk. This product would be a portable fuel cell system designed to
simultaneously charge up to 50 cell phones at a time. The system would
also be able to support other products, such as laptop and radios. The
product would be non-polluting, silent and portable enough to take from
location to location and support a small regions’ demand for cellular
communications. This is a product that Medis Technologies would like
to develop and market with the appropriate partner and we are currently
seeking funding to support the development. Development time would be
approximately three (3) years.
